Certain lab test results show the condition of your heart health and your risk of having a “heart-related event”. Know your numbers from these tests.

1 – Blood Pressure

the force exerted on the blood vessels by your heart as it pumps throughout your body

  • expressed as a maximum pressure (systolic) over a minimum pressure (diastolic)
  • displayed systolic over diastolic in millimeters of mercury
  • ideal blood pressure, BP — 120/80 or lower
  • high blood pressure = hypertension

2 – Blood Glucose/Sugar

  • fasting blood pressure without diabetes is under 100 mg/dL
  • normal blood glucose 2 hours after eating is under 140 mg/dL
  • with diabetes keep your before meal blood glucose between 80 and 130 mg/dL
  • with diabetes keep your postprandial blood glucose level under 180

3 – Cholesterol (HDL, LDL, Total)

  • needed to survive
  • optimal total cholesterol is less than 200 mg/dL
  • keep LDL under 130 mg/dL, optimally less than 100 mg/dL
  • HDL should be greater than 40 mg/dL; 60 mg/dL is optimal and protects against heart disease

4 – Triglycerides

  • measures the fats in your blood
  • should be lower than 150 mg/dL
