May is National Stroke Awareness Month

John Singleton. Luke Perry. What do they have in common? Both were famous, both died young, 51 and 52 respectively, and both died from strokes.

It’s May! That means it’s National Stroke Awareness Month. Let me remind you of a few facts about stroke…

  • Each year about 795,000 Americans have a stroke. Some are first strokes, others are second, third, etc. That’s about one stroke every 40 seconds.
  • Stroke is the #5 cause of death in the USA, and a leading cause of disability.
  • More than 137,000 people die of a stroke every year. That’s about 1 of every 18 deaths, and about 1 stroke death every 4 minutes.

Here’s an extremely important fact…

about 80% of strokes are PREVENTABLE!
