Do you like to start your day with coffee? Do you continue your day with more coffee? Did you know that more than 50% of us drink 3.1 cups of coffee a day?

Studies have already shown that coffee can reduce your risk of tinnitus, type II diabetes, and dying from liver cirrhosis. Now new research suggests that the more coffee you drink, the lower your risk of malignant melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. People who drank 4 cups of coffee a day had a 20% lower risk.

It only worked with caffeinated coffee, and only held true for malignant melanoma. Melanoma which had not spread beyond the outer skin cells, known as melanoma in situ, was not affected.

So, what’s the takeaway? If you already drink 4 cups of coffee a day, okay. You’ll have some advantage here. If you don’t, don’t bother increasing your coffee intake. Caffeine is a stimulant. Drinking too much, or more than you’re used to,  can cause insomnia, irritability, nervousness, rapid and irregular heartbeats, restlessness, tremors, stomach upset, dizziness, etc.

Also, keep in mind that a previous study suggested that drinking 4 cups of coffee a day may increase the risk of dying prematurely. Speaking of dying prematurely, did you know that malignant melanoma is one of the more common cancers to metastasize to the brain?  Believe me, you want to do whatever you can to stay out of my operating room. No matter how much coffee you drink, make sure you use sunscreen, stop smoking, eat properly, and get active.
