We think of Alzheimer’s Disease with dread, and we know we want to avoid it. In fact that’s one of the main reasons for this website. But what, exactly, is it?

Here are some facts:

  • ​Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disorder that destroys memory and thinking skills.
  • Alzheimer’s disease is irreversible.
  • ​Alzheimer’s disease is currently the 6th leading cause of death in the US. In older people, it may be 3rd behind heart disease and cancer.
  • Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia among older adults.
  • More than 5 million Americans may have Alzheimer’s.
  • In most people, Alzheimer’s symptoms first appear in their mid 60s.
  • Alzheimer’s disease is named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer. In 1906 he examined the brain of a woman who had died with an unusual mental illness. She had suffered memory problems, strange behaviors, and difficulty with language.
