During this Thanksgiving weekend, I know that many of you are decorating.That may mean climbing stairs and ladders inside and outside your home — going up to the attic and down to the basement to get those decorations. Then attaching them to pillars, railings, gutters, and roofs…While you’re doing that remember to keep safety in mind. Protect your head and brain, (Step #8 of the 10 Steps).You don’t want your holiday season ruined by a fall, or a traumatic brain injury. Of all injuries, brain injuries are the ones most likely to result in permanent disability, or even death. In the United States 1.7 million people each year suffer brain injuries. Almost 80% of them are treated in an emergency room and released, while 275,000 are hospitalized. 52,000 people die. In fact accidents are the 4th leading cause of death.Common causes of head injury include accidents. They occur at home, work, outdoors and while participating in sports. The leading cause of traumatic brain injury in those aged 15 to 64 is traffic accidents. In adults 65 and older the leading cause is FALLS! But, of course, falls can happen to anyone. Do everything you can to prevent them. Start with these tips — Keep clutter off of, and away from, stairs- Get rid of area rugs- Use a nonslip mat in the bathtub or shower- Put handrails in bathrooms- Put handrails on both sides of staircases- Put lighting throughout your home- Get your vision checked regularly- Exercise regularly- Always use appropriate sports and safety gear- Always buckle upYou’ll notice that these tips are not just for the holidays.
