How to Keep Your Brain Sharp and Young as You Get Older

Alzheimer's Disease

Are you one of those people who’s not too happy to be getting older? There isn’t a whole lot you can do about it. And, like my father always says, “It’s better than the alternative”. Think about that.

Are you concerned about your body failing you? Does it seem like once you turned a certain age, everything started to fall apart? 50? 60? 45, even? Suddenly your blood pressure was higher. And so was your blood sugar. And your doctor said it would all improve if you lost a few pounds. But you’re still trying to lose that weight.

Even worse is when you find yourself becoming more forgetful. Your thinking becomes slower. You don’t have to have Alzheimer’s. You may still find it harder to recall things and concentrate. Your brain may feel foggy. It can be upsetting and isolating.

But, guess what? It doesn’t have to be that way. Put in some time and effort and you can strengthen your brain, and make it work better. Here are a few things you can do to prevent age related cognitive decline and Say NO To Stroke and Alzheimer’s…

Exercise

Yes, exercise. It’s an important way to keep your body strong and healthy as you get older but it has other benefits. Memory improvement is one of the main effects of starting a new exercise regime, especially one that includes cardio. Strength training is good, too.

Use It Or Lose It

This definitely applies to your brain. Use your brain regularly in creative ways. You will reduce its deterioration. You will be more likely to grow new cells, (yes, that does happen), and make new connections between cells. Play chess. Don’t know how to play? Learn! Diet

This should not be a dirty word. You have to feed your brain quality nutrients. The right diet can do wonders for taking care of your brain and avoiding general deterioration, and even some specific neurological diseases. Particularly useful are fatty acids like omega 3 which you can get from fish, vitamins like B9, AKA folic acid, found in fruits and vegetables, and amino acids, from the proteins found in meats. (Can you get some of these from supplements? Yes, but in most cases your body will benefit more when you get it from food.)

Lifestyle

Your lifestyle definitely has an impact on your brain and mental health. Quality sleep and fresh air affect your brain positively. Alcohol and smoking can have very negative effects. Do fewer of the things that can impair your brain health and you will derive more benefit from an improved diet and exercise.

Staying Active

Remember that aging well doesn’t mean endless brain tasks, gym sessions and supplements. Stay active and engaged. Maybe you don’t want to retire just yet. Start new hobbies. Keep challenging yourself. That will keep your brain from going to waste.
