Get Fit, No Excuses!

exercise

Are you fit? Working on getting fit? Have you given up on it? I hope not. Maybe you have a million reasons why you can’t get fit or can’t exercise. Are they justified? I doubt it, and I can tell you I’ve heard a lot of excuses over the years. Let’s consider some of the most common ones…

You find exercise boring

Really? There are so many types of exercise and places to do them. There is literally something for everyone. You may have to think outside the box as far as what can be considered exercise. Dancing is exercise. So is gardening, skating. Don’t forget group sports like basketball, tennis… The key is to try different types of exercise until you find a few you like. Exercise doesn’t have to mean walking on a treadmill in a gym.

You’re too tired

That’s because you’re out of shape. Start small. Exercise for 10 minutes the first day. Then gradually increase the amount of time by a few minutes each day. Before you know it, you’ll be exercising 30 minutes a day five days a week. And take an honest look at your diet because the foods you eat may be dragging you down.

You tried before and couldn’t do it

Okay, take time to figure out what went wrong and then move forward. Was it the particular exercise? Try something different. If you’re planning to join a fitness class, make sure it’s the right level. Don’t get into the advanced class if you haven’t done the activity for 20 years! You won’t be able to keep up and you’ll fail (again).

There’s no one to watch the kids

Many gyms now have child care so that excuse won’t fly. If your gym doesn’t, you could hire a babysitter. Or take turns with a neighbor who has kids. You watch their kids while they exercise and they watch yours when you exercise.

You don’t have time

This is the all-time favorite excuse. People who use it seem to have time to watch TV, or to be on social media for hours at a time. But they just can’t find time to exercise. It’s a matter of priorities. When you decide to get fit, you’ll shuffle things around and find the 30 minutes you need to exercise. You can even exercise in front of the television. It doesn’t even have to be 30 minutes all at once. Find 15 minutes in the morning or during a lunch break, and 15 minutes later in the day. Or do three 10 minute workouts. Remember that making time to exercise now will result in a longer life, so ultimately you’ll have more time.

A healthy lifestyle should be the number one priority for all of us. That means a brain healthy diet and exercising most days. Don’t look for excuses not to take care of yourself.
