First Step Toward Optimal Brain Health

How have you been spending the last three months? Have you been:

  • eating more comfort foods?
  • isolated from family and friends?
  • unable to get to the gym to work out?
  • one of the “Essentials” working and worrying about getting sick?

None of those are healthy, not for your body or your brain. Let’s look at just one of them. If you haven’t been able to get to the gym hopefully you’ve discovered alternatives. Some gyms have been offering online classes. It’s not exactly the same but at least it’s something. There are DVDs and various online streaming workouts.

There are also simpler things. I’ve seen more people bicycling, walking and running in my neighborhood. I’ve been walking outside more often myself. It’s one of the simplest exercises and it’s pretty easy to get started.

If you haven’t been active, first speak with your doctor. Discuss the level of activity that’s safe for you. Your goal should be to walk briskly for 30 minutes at least 5 days a week. If you’re initially unable to do that start by walking around the block. Or to the corner and back. Maybe you can only make it down your driveway and back. That’s okay. Begin there and soon you’ll be able to do it twice.

The important thing is to take the first step.
